How to Apply Tattoos
Follow these simple steps to get a clean, long-lasting application every time.
What You'll Need
- Soap and water (or rubbing alcohol wipe)
- Scissors
- A damp cloth or sponge
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Clean the skin. Wash the area with mild soap and water, then dry completely. Avoid applying lotion, oil, or sunscreen beforehand, as these can prevent the tattoo from sticking.
- Cut out your design. Trim closely around the tattoo, following its outline for the cleanest edge.
- Peel off the clear plastic sheet. This reveals the design printed on the backing paper.
- Position the tattoo. Press the design face-down onto your skin exactly where you want it.
- Wet it thoroughly. Press a damp cloth or sponge firmly against the backing paper for 20-30 seconds, making sure the entire design is soaked.
- Peel away the backing paper. Slowly lift one corner and peel the paper off slowly and evenly. If it resists, dampen it a little more and try again.
- Let it dry. Avoid touching or rubbing the tattoo for about a minute so it can set fully.
Aftercare Tips
- Avoid tight clothing or excessive rubbing over the design for the first few hours.
- Pat dry gently after showering; don't scrub the area.
- Apply lotion sparingly, and only after the tattoo has fully set, as heavy moisturizing can cause it to lift.
- For the longest wear, avoid swimming or long baths right after application.
Removal
When you're ready to remove your tattoo, apply baby oil, rubbing alcohol, or an adhesive remover to a cotton pad and gently rub in circular motions until it lifts away.
